Heavy-duty vehicles: lowering CO2 emissions

The Council and the European Parliament have reached a provisional political agreement on CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs).

The agreement aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the road transport sector and establish targets for 2030, 2035, and 2040.

These rules align with the EU’s climate ambitions for 2030 and its goal of climate neutrality by 2050.

The agreement expands the regulation’s scope to include smaller trucks, urban buses, coaches, and trailers.

Certain exemptions apply, and the regulation will be reviewed for effectiveness and impact in 2027. The agreement now awaits formal adoption by both institutions.
